CASE STUDYEliminating Operator Shock on a Paper Re-winderA major paper converter in the Portland area had a roll-to-roll slitter/rewinder machine that developed very high levels of static electricity and operators working with this machine were getting shocked and wanted relief. The manager asked Weaver Technologies to come to their facility and assess the situation and make recommendations. After observing the process and measuring static charge levels with an Electrostatic Fieldmeter, it was confirmed the coated paper was generating static electricity charges in excess of 20,000 volts. The problem was when operators were too close, the rolls would discharge into their fingers, hands or legs. This presented a safety hazard and affected productivity. Mike Weaver's recommendation was to install a Simco R50 Blue bar, wide enough to neutralize the entire web, mounted where there was free air space above and below the paper. The results were successful. The operators were no longer getting shocked, productivity improved and the company removed a safety hazard. Weaver Technologies' on-site consultation is available to help customers improve their quality and productivity. Call us if you have a need to eliminate static electricity in your facility.
